Evaluation Activity 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

The Demographic profile

We decided to aim our film at older teens as our focus audience, this is why we have chosn a 16 year old boy to represent the audience watching our film, although the girl is aged 21 we still felt this was appropriate because our film could still attract people of that age band. Demographics are used to work out/determine where people partake in jobs, race and location, Directors would usually use a demographic profile to have research on their chosen audience and try to expand their audience to as many bands as possible, we chose not to use two people of the same demographic background because it helped us understand the opinions/lifestyle of more than one person and there look on life.
we also chose 1 male and 1 female because it allowed us to see what both sexes thought of the opening, and who would be a better sex to aim it at, although boys are sterotypically believed to prefer thriller, gore, and action films in the last few years it's said that the balance is now 50/50 between males and female thriller viewers. Our main target audience is set to  be groups E,D and B this is because from research we found out that these are more likely to go to the cinema and buy DVDs.
We used psychographics to find out the personality traits/behaviour, attitudes, beliefs, interests and lifestyles and took these into account when choosing our target audience. The two people we chose are both looked at as mainstreamers in the communities because they are conventional, have a favour for money and usually conformist. Tommy is the same age as most of the people in our 6th form so we thought his age would be good to use because it will be the same age as the other people watching our film and giving us first hand feedback.

Diary of a day filming

This is the link so our diary of a day filming, I have set it out in a newsletter style to attract the audience/fans and let them know what we did during the days of filming, we felt this would be a better idea than a long boring word document or a prezi because its different to all the other documents we have used. It has been published to twitter so our audience can see what its like and gives a larger audience.

Marketing through social networking

We have made a few social networking sites such as twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube to let our audience know about what is happening in our production and to keep them up to date with the latest news about our thriller. We decided to use these sites as these are the latest/ most recent sites our age range, audience, go on at the moment meaning they will be able to see it easier and keep in touch with what we are doing. We are also getting our friends to like our pages and tell others about it so other people will spread the word on our production and more people will follow what we are doing.

This is a picture of our YouTube account where we will post videos which we will post on our blog for the audience to see.

This is a picture of BBQ Productions twitter page which we will be tweeting people to follow us and follow media directors and institutions to ask for tips if needed be.

This is a picture of how we set up a Facebook like page.
This is a picture of our Facebook page up and running, it will allow people to like and post within the page and we will also take messages from them.

This is a picture of our Instagram page where we post our latest pictures of while we are filming and what we are doing while in lessons, for example; a picture of us talking about our brief.

Location 2 - Shed

These pictures are of Becky's shed, this is our second location that we filmed in.
We thought this would be a good location to film the little girl being 'abducted' as it was quite a creepy little shed which went with the theme of a little girl playing in the shed and running around the garden having fun. I (Emma) was also scared of the spiders in the shed, as you can tell by the pictures of Kieran having to clean out the shed, which gave the film a sense of realism as it looked like i was frightened because of the man approaching. We had many different ideas to try out with this location as we had a lot to work with.
We had to refilm many times as I would run out of the shed because I was scared, couldn't open the shed door in which we had to cut the grass underneath the door frame and times where we would talk or laugh over the film meant that we would have to reinact the scene once more. All in all the location we chose was a good idea as it was isolated which made it more scarier as it could show that it could have actually happened.
The lighting was always natural and bright to suggest the girl is pure and innocent were as the man was always standing in the shadows suggesting he is an evil, bad character.

Location 1 - Barn

This was our first location in a barn, we set everything out to look creepy to look as if this is the mans lair.
We were able to get this location as it is Becky's uncles home which he kindly let us film in, we thought this would be a good location to start our thriller in as it was quite empty and eery. We had all the equipment we needed within the barn. The lighting was quite dull when we had the lights off which meant we needed an extra torch light to help us in filming, the pictures were placed accurately on the wall so that you can see exactly what the man has done to these children and makes the audience question why they are up there and what is going on...We also chose to film on the field as it was quite misty which made the man look more scarier as he came out of the mist holding a shovel, we also chose to film as it was a secluded location meaning the man was isolated and makes us wonder why he is imerging from the field on his own.

Why we aren't going to use Poster 1

We decided we aren't going to use idea 1 as because of our filming and continuously taking pictures while doing so, we found a perfect picture to fit our theme which is our own photo meaning it is also non copy right. Although this picture was chosen as it was an effective picture as it captured the little girl’s frightened face as she was being grabbed from behind by an obvious older man. The only problem with this poster was that we didn’t add any character names, our logo or a boiler plate. When looking at posters we thought the look of the diamond effect looked interesting as it showed the photos pointing towards the bold name of the film.

Poster attempt 1 - Marketing our film

Logo

This is our logo for our production company.

Inspirations of our thriller

When planning to make our thriller we watched a few films for inspiration. As we are doing a physiological thriller we had to make our film appear to the audience as being a confusing film to get the audience thinking and asking questions about what is going to happen/ what has happened.
The types of films we watched were to do with paedophiles as this is what we are hoping to aim our film about, although this could be a hard aspect to cover. We all went round Becky’s house to watch; ‘The Lovely Bones’, ‘One Hour Photo’ and ‘Disturbia’ this meant we could get some ideas to help us with our film. When filming we chose to base it around our inspired movie which was ‘The Lovely Bones’ as it had a clear structure and gave us a clue on how we can make our film creepier in filming about a paedophile.
We over looked all aspects of making the film more realistic, for example the use of lighting. The change in lighting from the paedophile and the little girl allowed us to show the difference between good and bad. We had to manage to film certain parts in pitch black which meant this would be a suitable time to fit in with the paedophile but also meant we would have to cope with the camera having poor lighting in which we brought in a flash light. As for the little girl we filmed in natural lighting which was meant to show her as vulnerable and pure, also meaning that she is doing no harm but as it gets darker we realise something is about to happen.

From ‘The Lovely Bones’ we adapted the idea of when the paedophile draws out the victims house and how he is going to capture her, we thought this would be a good idea to make Kieran look more creepier and makes the audience worry for her. We used this idea in our film and it looked affective as it was as if it was going to happen as we drew out the place in which he takes her out accurately.

Child abduction pictures analysis

We have researched real life children and real abductions which we will either put on the walls or tables in our thriller to give a sense that the abductor has taken away all these children.
The pictures show that we have researched young children to show our aim in age range in which we are trying to target when filming our thriller.
We will also post a picture of myself (Emma Hodgson) to show that I will be the next victim fall into his trap.

Inspirations of a thriller opening (how to act)

We were researching the woman in Black to influence us on our thriller opening and came across this video, we thought this could help us when filming to act more scarier and make it more realistic. This is also linked in to the theme we wanted to use.

Media film research - film night

I have chosen to display these pictures to our blog as we all had a movie night to watch as many thrillers as we could so we could get to grips with the techniques and editing used to make a thriller film to give a sense of realism and fear.
These pictures gave us a clue as to what we are going to base our film around as most of the films are to do with scary children playing and singing or creepy dolls. We then realised this is a good technique to grasp the audiences attention by the tension and suspense that is portayed through children.

Chosen background picture

We chose this picture of an evil screaming girl so it represents the theme of death in which we are going with for our main thriller. This shows our research for what we have been looking up on the internet to plan for our theme.
